Hargrave Custom Yachts to Sponsor
Westlawn 75th Anniversary Celebration
Renowned Westlawn Alumnus’s
Support is Deep and Long-Lasting
January 7, 2005,
Edgewater, MD: The Westlawn
Institute of Marine Technology is pleased to announce that Hargrave Custom
Yachts will be sponsoring Westlawn’s 75th anniversary Diamond Jubilee
Celebration. Hargrave Custom Yachts president, Mike Joyce made this generous
contribution to Westlawn, in late December 2004. Going back nearly half a
century, this is a continuation of long-standing support from Hargrave,
including the Hargrave Design-Competition scholarship to Westlawn.
Naval architect, Jack
Hargrave enrolled in Westlawn in June 1954 at the age of 32. He graduated a few
years later and went on to build one of the most prominent design offices in
the world, producing drawings for both yachts and commercial vessels and
working for companies like Hatteras and Bertram, among many others. The
Hargrave legacy lives on in Hargrave Custom Yachts (www.hargrave-usa.com),
where among other things, recent Westlawn Graduate, Ben Dodarell is a member of
the design team, continuing the successful partnership of Westlawn education
with the Hargrave office. A new biography about Jack Hargrave, written by
Showboats Editor Marilyn Mower will be presented to the public for the first
time at the Westlawn dinner and will provide valuable insight into one of the
most influential designers of the twentieth century.
