FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE WESTLAWN SCHOOL OF YACHT DESIGN --
.............A CATALYST FOR INNOVATION
For more than 70 years, the Westlawn School of Yacht Design has
served the pleasure boat industry as a source of design professionals
prepared to meet the emerging needs of the marine marketplace.
As boat owners' need change, pleasure boat manufacturers must respond
with new products offering relevant features, equipment, performance
and style. Those builders whose boats best reflect those changing
needs are the true leaders in design innovation, and many of these
rely on Westlawn graduates to drive the development process.
Far from an exercise in blue-sky daydreaming, product innovation
is a painstaking process, first of identifying emerging consumer
needs and then applying learned skills to shape creative solutions
in the form of a new model, a refined interior arrangement or a
safer, more functional deck configuration. For a growing number
of design professionals throughout the industry, those skills have
been honed by intensive study through the Westlawn School.
"The Westlawn School currently counts more than 500 students
engaged in marine design coursework," said school director
Dave Gerr. "Westlawn graduates today serve on design teams
throughout the industry, as employees of major boat builders and
through independent design firms. Some have gone on to teach at
the college level, and many serve as members of industry standards
organizations."
As an institute of distance education, the Westlawn School offers
a curriculum of intensive study covering principles of yacht design,
aesthetics and utilization of design, construction methods, systems
and equipment. Recently, the school introduced Yacht Design Lite,
a continuing education course offering industry professionals a
broad-based introduction to design principles.
Located in Mystic Seaport, Mystic, Connecticut, the Westlawn School
of Yacht Design offers specialized education to students throughout
North America and worldwide. The school, an affiliate of the
American Boat & Yacht Council, is approved by the Connecticut
Department of Higher Education, and accredited by the Distance
Education and Training Council.
